Ethiopian international Canaan Markneh found the net yet again in Round 6 of the Libyan Premier League as Al Madina beat Al Watan 3-0 on Saturday. Markneh joined the Libyan side on August 2024 after rejecting a contract extension at Ethiopian side Mechal.
Markneh scored the third goal as Al Madina cruised to a routine win away from home. It is his second league goal for the club, the first being against Al Ittihad Misurata in December.
Markneh left Mechal at the end of his contract where he missed out on the Ethiopian Premier League title. After beginning his career at Addis Ababa University and Addis Ababa Ketema, he played for his boyhood club Adama Ketema and won a league title with Saint George. Markneh is the second Ethiopian to ply his trade in the North African country after Shemeles Bekele, who had a stint at Al Ittihad Tripoli for six months before joining Sudanese side Al Merrikh.
Recently he has been overlooked by the national side as he missed out on the last four competitive matches for Ethiopia in AFCON and CHAN qualifying encounters. Markneh last played for the Waliyas against Guinea in 2025 AFCON qualifying when Syli National emerged victorious 3-0 in October.
Al Madina are second with 10 points in Group 4 of the Libyan premier league. Giants Al Ahli Tripoli top the group with 15 points.
