Ethiopian Higher League side Wolkite Ketema has been docked six points by the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) following the club’s refusal to honor a decision taken by FIFA involving Kenyan winger Clifton Miheso.
Miheso was close to joining the Ethiopian side, at the time in the top flight Ethiopian Premier League, for the 2022/23 season. The deal never materialized for unknown reasons. Wolkite and Miheso’s agent failed to agree on key points as the move failed to go through.
The case has been under investigation by FIFA, who through the EFF repeatedly ordered Wolkite to honor promises that the club failed to abide by.
According to a statement from the EFF, the decision to punish Wolkite is supported by FIFA. Wolkite Ketema continues to make headlines for the wrong reasons this season. The club started off the season competing in the top flight but got demoted to the second tier Higher League after failing to meet the EFF’s club licensing requirements.
The point deduction forces Wolkite to face yet another potential relegation as they now sit 11th with nine points in the 12-club league after previously collecting 15 points from 13 matches. Relegation to the third division Ethiopian League One would be devastating for the club if they fail to climb out of the danger zone this season.
