The Ethiopian Cup Round of 16 kicked off earlier today in host cities Sebeta and Hawassa. Ethiopian Premier League sides Hadiya Hosaina, Sidama Coffee and Hawassa Ketema progressed to the quarterfinals after securing victories on Wednesday.

Hadiya Hosaina carried on from their impressive league record as they beat Ethiopian First League (Third Division) side Harar Ketema 1-0. Temesgen Birhanu scored a late winner to seal the win for the Hosaina team.

Sidama Coffee dumped out Premier League relegation battlers Sihul Shire. Habtamu Tadesse’s second half goal was the difference between the two sides. Shire came in following a morale boosting Tigray derby win over Wolwalo Adigrat University but failed to replicate the same feat in the knockout tournament. In the previous round, Shire defeated holders Ethiopian Coffee.

Under new coach Mulugeta Miheret, Hawassa Ketema made a winning start after sweeping Negele Arsi aside 2-0. Tebark Hefamo and Biruk Tadesse scored for the Lakers.

Four lower division clubs remain in contention to book their place in the quarterfinals as they hope to break the dominance of Premier League clubs in the cup.
