It was a surprising day from the 2024/25 Ethiopian Cup quarterfinal games as second division side Sheger Ketema and Sidama Coffee booked their places in the semifinals on Saturday.
It has been a week to remember for the Addis Ababa suburb side Sheger as they beat top flight side Bahirdar Ketema to reach their maiden Ethiopian Cup semis. Sidama Coffee overcame Hadiya Hosaina 3-0 in Hawassa.
Sheger Ketema continues to make headlines after beating Bahirdar Ketema 4-3 on penalties. The Ethiopian Higher League side gained promotion to the Ethiopian Premier League on Tuesday and are now in the semifinals of the Ethiopian Cup. The Waves of Tana took an early lead through Jerome Philip but Sheger got back in the match in the second half through an equalizer from Muluken Tesfaye.
Sheger were decisive in the subsequent penalty shootout as they beat Bahirdar 4-3. They are the only lower division side to reach this milestone after the Ethiopian Football Federation restructured the Ethiopian Cup.
A brilliant second half saw Sidama Coffee hammer Hadiya Hosaina 3-0. Goals from Habtamu Tadesse, Birhanu Bekele and Yigezu Bogale gave the coffee traders the win as they kept their hope of winning a major title alive.
Ethiopian Cup quarterfinal games will be held in Hawassa.
