Ethiopian midfielder Gatoch Panom has agreed to join Iraq Stars League side Newroz SC. The Kurdistan region club confirmed the move on Friday.

Panom left Ethiopian Insurance to seal the move to the middle east. Pan-Africa Football understands the Ethiopian club agreed to let him go for free. Newroz stated on its official Telegram channel that they signed Panom for the 2024/25 season league and cup games.

The defensive midfielder started nine league games in the 2024/25 season for Gebremedhin Haile’s side. He joined Insurance from a largely disappointing stay at Fasil Kenema. Panom previously played for Addis Ababa giants Ethiopian Coffee and Saint George, winning back to back league titles with the latter one.

Panom, who can be deployed as a box to box midfielder, also had stints in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. He will be the first Ethiopian to play in the Iraqi league.

Newroz currently sits 16th with 14 points in the league table. The club recently parted ways with legendary former coach of Iraq, Jorvan Vieira. Iraqi coach Qahtan Jasser replaced the Brazilian coach.
