The Ethiopian Premier League Share Company admitted for the first time that there is an ongoing investigation on players who have been suspected of tax fraud. In December, Pan-Africa Football broke the news on the investigation of a task force set up to curb tax evasion in Ethiopian football.

The league put out an official statement asking the public to notify the task force on any suspected breach of regulations related to financial payments in the top flight. Over the summer, the league introduced a new financial system forbidding clubs to spend more than 403,000 USD (50,000,000 Ethiopian Birr) on players’ salary. Those who defied this new directive are subject to suspension.

The task force began work in 2024 and the league also confirmed there has been ongoing investigations of players and clubs. The investigated clubs and players are still unknown but Pan-Africa Football can reveal that Mechal, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Sidama Coffee, Diredawa Ketema and players who transferred to the club during the summer window are subject to the ongoing investigation.

The league stated any suspected transfer of a player will be investigated as they urged the public to identify those involved. The task force has already provided a hot line number and an email address for people to report any suspected violations. The league further noted those who rightly notify the task force will receive a financial reward.
