Supporters of Ethiopian Premier League heavyweights Mechal and Saint George were left underwhelmed after both teams failed to secure victories in Saturday's matches from the 16th Round.

Mechal took an early lead but were forced to share the spoils against Bahirdar Ketema in a 1-1 draw. Abel Negash put Mechal ahead with a splendid strike from distance for his second goal of the season. However it was level by halftime when Ethiopia national team midfielder Chernet Gugsa deftly maneuvered through traffic before his low shot beat Mechal goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi.

It was similar story in the later match between Saint George and Hawassa Ketema. Rising talent Biniam Fikre put the Horsemen ahead in the 41st minute to complete a well executed team goal. Abenezer Yohannes leveled for struggling Hawassa with a crashing long range drive just before halftime in a match that ended 1-1. Saint George remain in fourth place while Hawassa move a step closer to climbing out of the relegation zone.

League leaders Ethiopian Insurance were the biggest beneficiaries from Saturday's results as they continue to lead with a two-point gap ahead of second placed Mechal. Hadiya Hosaina have a good opportunity to move level with Insurance on Sunday when they face last placed Wolwalo Adigrat.
