The Ethiopian Premier League Share Company has revealed the increment on prize money awarded for the club in the 2024/25 season.
For the past four seasons the league has seen an increase in prize money after agreeing a lucrative TV rights deal with SuperSport.
According to Soccer Ethiopia, the league is set to hand a huge financial benefit to the 18 clubs as SuperSport are set to end their broadcast deal with the league after June 2025. League general manager Kifle Seife in Adama stated that the prize money increment will happen this season.
“This season we will have a huge amount of prize money. The league winner will get a huge award. The difference in rank will also be a crucial factor in getting the award.”
The increment is set to happen after the government of Ethiopia has gone through a macroeconomic change in August 2024 as the exchange of dollar to birr is floated. The changes skyrocketed the devaluation to Birr as one USD is now 124 Ethiopian Birr.
Seife failed to disclose the exact amount of the prize money but it can reach up to 25 million Birr ($193,769 USD) for the winner. Last season the winner Commercial Bank of Ethiopia received 11 million Birr for winning the 2023/24 league season.
