Ethiopian striker Abubeker Nasir has dispelled rumours that he has gone AWOL at SuperSport United, insisting that the South African team’s doctors told him to take a break after an injury.
Nasir took to his Facebook page to explain his side of the story after reports went viral on South African football social media platforms that he was no longer reporting for training with the Betway Premiership team.
“There is information circulating on social media regarding my current status with SuperSport. To be honest, there was a lot of miscommunication and misunderstanding with the club,” he wrote.
The 24-year-old explained that he took a break after picking up an injury during a friendly for SuperSport on January 5, 2025.
“I was told to rest by the club’s physician to recover since the injury is not substantial, which I did. Later, I received a message through my agent about my absenteeism. I then communicated to the club about the situation and apologised for the incident,” he added.
The forward signed for SuperSport in October 2024 after switching from Pretoria rivals Mamelodi Sundowns where he struggled for game-time largely due to injuries. The attacker first arrived in South Africa in 2023 when he signed for Sundowns after impressing in Ethiopia for club and country.
