Nigeria international Victor Osimhen was on target but his goal could not help Galatasaray as they bowed out of the Europa League following a 2-2 return leg draw against AZ Alkmaar at RAMS Park on Thursday.

Osimhen’s Galatasaray went into the fixture seeking to overturn a 4-1 defeat suffered in the first leg played at AFAS Stadion on Thursday, February 13. Despite playing in front of their fans, the Turkish giants found themselves trailing 1-0 at half time when Seiya Maikuma put the visiting side ahead in the 42nd minute.

Denso Kasius then doubled Alkmaar’s lead in the 55th minute, a goal which broke the hearts of Galatasaray as they faced a mountain to climb. The Super Eagles forward pulled a goal back for Galatasaray in the 56th minute before Roland Sallai ensured that his side did not lose at home with a leveller in the 70th minute.

The outcome means Osimhen’s Galatasaray were knocked out of the competition on 6-3 aggregate scoreline. In total, Osimhen featured in seven matches in the competition, scored six goals and provided one assist.

Osimhen and Galatasaray will now shift their focus to Super Lig where they are scheduled to host Fenerbahce SK on Monday, February 24th, at RAMS Park.
