Former South Africa’s Bafana Bafana defender Bradley Carnell has been named head coach of Major League Soccer (MLS) side Philadelphia Union.
Announcing the appointment of the 42-capped former South African international, Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner described Carnell as a well-versed coach.
Tanner said: “With knowledge of both MLS and international markets, he is tactically astute and aligned with our sporting strategy. “
The ex-Bafana Bafana defender has since said he was excited to join the club, citing its rich culture.
“There is something special when you speak about the Major League and Philadelphia. There is always goodness, always the toughness and there is energy that this team plays with. I am excited to be part of that community and part of that continuity to build that culture,” he said.
The 47-year-old spent most of his coaching career in America, managing the New York Red Bulls between 2020 and 2022 and St. Louis City from 2022 to 2023 when he led them to the Western Conference championship.
The former Bafana Bafana defender had a distinguished playing career, especially in Germany where he played for clubs such as VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Monchengladbach.
He launched his coaching career in South Africa at the University of Johannesburg FC before serving as an assistant coach at Orlando Pirates and Free State Stars (now defunct).
