Former South Africa women’s national team defender Janine van Wyk has been appointed as the new head coach of JVW FC, a team she owns.

The Hollywoodbets Super League team has confirmed the appointment of the former Banyana Banyana defender who has taken over from Mich Stevens, who she worked with from 2024 as an assistant coach.

Wyk has transitioned into coaching after obtaining UEFA and CAF B licenses upon hanging up her boots from a distinguished playing career in South Africa, the United States and Europe.

“Her appointment marks a new chapter in her illustrious football career. With her deep understanding of the game, extensive playing experience, and coaching qualifications, Janine van Wyk is ready to take on the challenge to lead the Blue Diamond,” JVW FC’s statement reads.

The blonde-haired former defender is set to test her coaching pedigree when South Africa’s elite women’s football league, the Hollywoodbets Super League, kicks off its 2025 season in a couple of months.

Van Wyk represented Banyana Banyana at WAFCON and the World Cup finals. She featured for clubs such as Houston Dash in the United States, Glasgow City in Scotland and also a season in Greece before returning home to retire with JVW Football Club.
