Former Ghana defender Sam Johnson has cautioned PAOK FC star, Baba Rahman against returning to play for the Black Stars.
The lanky left-back has been a subject of harsh criticisms among Ghanaian football lovers due to his recent patchy performances for the national team. He last appeared for Ghana in September 2023 at the Africa Cup of Natios in Ivory Coast where the journey ended with a group stage exit.
The 30-year-old has however regained his mojo for club side, PAOK FC in both domestic and European outings this season. The blistering form has reignited calls for the former Asante Kotoko defender to reconsider returning to play for the four time Africans champions after initially stepping away to prioritize his fitness.
Sam Johnson, who played in Greece for Kalamata has advised Baba Rahman to end his romance with the senior national team. “If I were him [Baba Rahman], I won’t come because he has suffered a lot from Ghanaians including some of us,” Sam Johnson told Pan-Africa Football.
“Because, it is not going well for him when he comes and we don’t see the Baba Rahman that we used to know and he has received a lot of criticisms from Ghanaians. If I were to be him, I don’t care whether I’m playing like Leonel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, I won’t come.
“But that decision is up to him but if I were to be him at this position or in his position, I won’t come. I’m done with the national team.”
Rahman has collected some decent statistics this term - appearing 10 times with three goals in the Greek Super League for PAOK. The former Chelsea, Schalke and Augsburg defender has four matches with a goal in the UEFA Champions League and seven outings in the Europa League, scoring two times.
