Ex Inter Milan and Monaco star Mohamed Kallon named Sierra Leone coach

Former Sierra Leone striker Mohamed Kallon has been appointed the new head coach for the country’s national male football team, the Leone Stars.


In a statement from Sierra Leone Football Association signed by Ibrahim Kamara, the Head of Media and Marketing, Kallon, whose playing career, both domestically and internationally, was exceptional, will assume the duties with immediate effect.


The Executive Committee of Sierra Leone Football Association is pleased to announce the appointment of former Leone Stars captain and international football icon Mohamed Kallon as head coach of the Sierra Leone national senior men’s team, Leone Stars,” read part of the statement obtained by Pan-Africa Football.


“Kallon, one of Sierra Leone’s most celebrated footballers, will assume his duties effective immediately as the team prepares for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Leone Stars are set to face Guinea Bissau and Egypt next month with Kallon lead the charge.’


The statement continued: “The SLFA will officially unveil Mohamed Kallon at a press conference scheduled for a date that will be announced later.”


According to SLFA, the appointment of Kallon marks a significant step forward for Sierra Leone football since he brings a wealth of experience, passion and leadership to the national team.


Before playing for Inter, the 45-year-old Kallon had one-year stints at Serie B club Genoa, and the Serie A clubs Bologna, Cagliari, Reggina and Vicenza. After leaving Inter in 2004, Kallon played at Monaco for three years.


He subsequently had short stints in Greece, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and China. He made 39 appearances for the Sierra Leone national team during his career. Kallon is the younger brother of former Sierra Leonean international footballers Kemokai Kallon and Musa Kallon.
