Former Orlando Pirates playmaker Joseph Kamwendo believes the Buccaneers can still challenge leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns, for the Betway Premiership title despite the two teams being separated by a nine-point gap.
Kamwendo said this during a follow-up interview with Pan-Africa Football on Tuesday after earlier remarks that Sundowns were still the overwhelming favourites for the title defence.
The former midfielder said Pirates can push the leaders all the way, as long as Jose Riveiro’s men remain consistent in their performances. Sundowns thumped Pirates, who have two games in hand, 4-1 last weekend.
“I feel if they can continue winning games, they will definitely challenge Mamelodi. So far so good. We are taking one step at a time,” he said.
The former TP Mazembe player then singled out Relebohile Mofokeng for praise, saying his performance reminds him of his good old days.
“Pirates will always have quality players but when you look at this young boy it reminds me a lot about myself,”’ Kamwendo added. Meanwhile, the former Flames captain is set to start his reign as the head coach of Lilongwe-based Creck Sporting Club, replacing McDonald Mtetemera.
Kamwendo, a CAF B license holder, will work with Abel Mkandawire and Harrison Saidi as the first and second assistant coaches.
Creck finished in sixth place last season, 23 points behind eventual champions Silver Strikers.
Kamwendo had a successful playing career at top clubs in Africa, including Orlando Pirates in South Africa and Caps United in Zimbabwe, calling it time in 2019.
