Former SuperSport United striker Atusaye Nyondo has paid a moving tribute to South Africa’s Betway Premiership club's coach Gavin Hunt as he closes on his 1000th game in charge.
The Malawian forward was reacting to Hunt's celebration of his 999th game in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) after beating Kaizer Chiefs 4-1 on Tuesday afternoon.
In reaction, Nyondo, who plays for South African second-division side, Casric Stars, told Pan-Africa Football that Hunt impacted his career after arriving from Lilongwe in 2011.
"What a great guy he is. He was more than a father to me when I went to SuperSport because I was so young," he said.
The former National First Division Golden Boot Award-winner recalled how Hunt would motivate him to score.
Nyondo said: "I remember when I used to score goals every one or two games. He came to me and told me: 'Son, if you score a hat trick, I will give you my daughter’. I never scored a hat-trick but he made me feel welcome. What a lovely person he is. I wish him more success because he deserves it."
The former Malawian international described it as an honour being coached by the former Kaizer Chiefs mentor.
"He is a very great coach; one of the top coaches in South Africa…And it is a great honour to be coached by him. I learned a lot from him. It is my prayer that God should continue blessing him more,” he said.
The 34-year-old centre-forward returned to South Africa this year to join Casric after helping Silver Strikers win the TNM Super League last season in Malawi.
