Angolan star goalkeeper Hugo Marques has expressed his burning desire to join Kaizer Chiefs and reunite with countryman Inacio Miguel at the Soweto giants.
Speaking exclusively to Pan-Africa Football, the 2024 CAF Champions League participant with the Angolan giants said he was willing to leave Petro de Luanda at the end of his contract this June.
“If there is an offer, I will go easily because Inacio is there. I’m free now. I can assign a pre-contract [with Chiefs],” he said.
The 38-year-old revealed that the Soweto giants have always admired him, saying: “Chiefs always ask for me, now I’m free. I can join Chiefs next season.”
Jornal de Angola newspaper of Angola has since reported that TP Mazembe are also interested in Marques but there is no formal approach from the Congolese team.
“However, South Africa's Kaizer Chiefs, despite not yet making their wish official, have been exploring the possibility of signing the player,” the newspaper reports.
With Chiefs yet to find a suitable replacement for Itumeleng Khune and tinkering among Fiacre Ntwari, Brandon Petersen and Bruce Bvuma, Marques might be the medium-term solution to coach Nasreddine Nabi’s goalkeeping conundrum.
The Angolan set the record in the 2024 edition of the Champions’ League group stages after keeping clean sheets in six consecutive matches. Petro reached the quarterfinals where they were eliminated by TP Mazembe.
The former Palancas Negras first-choice keeper rejoined Petro de Luanda in 2023 after abruptly ending his contract with Cape Town City FC in South Africa, where he established himself, winning the 2021-22 PSL Best Goalkeeper of the Season Award.
Marques was outstanding for Petro de Luanda in the 2023-24 Girabola season in Angola, conceding only 11 goals in 28 league matches for Petro de Luanda.
