Express FC extended their unbeaten streak to four matches with a commanding 3-1 victory over Mbarara City at Nakivubo Stadium on Thursday, moving up to fourth place on the StarTimes Uganda Premier League table with 16 points.
Abdul Rashid Kawawa starred with a brace, while Sam Ssenyonjo netted his sixth goal of the season to secure the Red Eagles' victory. Mbarara’s consolation came from Seiri Arigumaho, also scoring his sixth goal of the campaign.
Kawawa opened the scoring in the 21st minute, expertly heading in Richard Basangwa's cross. Mbarara equalized in the 37th minute when Arigumaho converted a pinpoint delivery from Joseph Kafumbe.
However, Express reclaimed the lead just before halftime after Mbarara goalkeeper Abdu Kimera misjudged a clearance, leaving Kawawa to loft a stunning finish from range. Ssenyonjo sealed the win in the second half, capitalizing on a defensive mishap to make it 3-1.
The defeat leaves Mbarara City in 10th place with 12 points, while Express remain four points behind league leaders Vipers SC, who have a game in hand.
Elsewhere, Mbale Heroes edged Soltilo Bright Stars 1-0 in a bottom-of-the-table clash in Eastern Uganda. Cosia Waiswa scored the only goal to give Mbale their second win of the season, lifting them to eight points but still in the relegation zone.
On Wednesday, URA FC bounced back from two consecutive losses with a dominant 3-0 win over Wakiso Giants at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium. A first-half strike from Godfrey Sekibengo and a second-half brace by Ivan Ahimbisibwe propelled URA to fifth place with 14 points.
Ahimbisibwe’s clinical performance took his tally to seven goals, tying him with SC Villa’s Charles Lwanga at the top of the scoring charts. Meanwhile, Wakiso remain winless in seven matches, sitting just above the relegation zone with nine points.
In another Wednesday fixture, Police FC and UPDF played out a 2-2 draw. Aggrey Kirya's own goal and Allan Bukenya's strike gave Police the lead twice, but Bashir Kabuye's double ensured UPDF shared the spoils. Both teams are tied on 13 points.
