The Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) have made changes to its term limit statute, giving the president and executive committee (ExCo) members to run for three mandates. The change in statute was passed during the general assembly of FECAFOOT in mid-November.

Three years ago, ex-Barcelona star striker Samuel Eto’o was elected as president to lead FECAFOOT and the new amendment will allow the former African Player of the Year awardee to remain in power for the next 12 years if elected. According to the report by the Cameroon News Agency the statute also gives ExCo members the same privilege.

Eto’o is accredited for progressing the visibility of the local league and his strong commitment to curb age cheating in the youth level. Nevertheless, the former forward repeatedly made a name in different fiascos, corruption scandals and was even suspended by the FIFA Discipline Committee at one point.

Similar attempts to increase his mandate two years ago were futile. Some of his critics accused the president of attempting to hold onto power for a longer period of time, something Eto’o has denied. The practice of amending statutes to remain in power is now becoming a common practice for some African football associations and federations.
