FIFA Club World Cup: Mokwena backs African representatives to sparkle

Outgoing Wydad Athletic Club coach Rulani Mokwena believes the the African representatives will not go to the FIFA Club World Cup for merrymaking.

Mokwena, who confirmed his departure from the Moroccan outfit at the end of the current Botola Pro League next month, has backed Mamelodi Sundowns, Al Ahly, Esperance and Wydad to deliver strong performances on behalf of the continent.

"I think we can expect the African clubs to do very well and I've been fortunate enough to work with two of the four that have qualified – Mamelodi Sundowns, of course, because I was there and helped the club qualify, so I have great regard and warm wishes for them to do exceptionally well," said Mokwena.

"Their group is tough, but I think the quality that they have with the players and team they will send to represent us as Africans is extremely strong. I think also, with Al Ahly, they have the pedigree, the history, the experience of participating in this competition, and for sure I think they will do well.

"And then, of course, with Esperance, they've also got a very strong squad, a team that has done great things for the last three or four years on the continent, and in their domestic competitions, so I would expect them to reach the expectations and perform to a level that will bring a lot of prestige and respect to the continent.

"And then, of course, my excitement is for us as Wydad – I think we will surprise a lot of people, we've got some very difficult games, and we've got a very strong group."

The trophy tour for the newly expanded club competition, which is set for the USA in June, touched down in Casablanca this week to round up excitement ahead of the competition.
