FIFA orders Congo Brazzaville federation to pay Paul Put

FIFA has ruled in favor of current Uganda national team coach Paul Put to receive the outstanding salary that Congo Brazzaville Football Federation (FECOFOOT) owes him. The ruling by FIFA was communicated to the FECOFOOT in mid-December.

The Belgian coach signed a two-year contract to lead the Red Devils in 2021. Put was expected to send Congo to the 2023 AFCON and 2022 FIFA World Cup but his team failed to qualify for both tournaments. His contract ended in 2023 after which he left to coach Uganda. Put is finding success in East Africa after qualifying the Cranes to the 2025 AFCON.

Congo failed to pay a salary amounting to 34,500 Euros to the 68-year-old tactician. The letter sent to FECOFOOT states that "payment (including any applicable interest) must be paid within 45 days of receipt of the confirmation letter."

FECOFOOT has until January 18 to appeal the decision. In a similar fiasco in 2020, FECOFOOT was ordered to pay former coach Sebastian Minge's outstanding salary.

In Congo, even though it is FECOFOOT that negotiates the details of contracts for national team head coaches, it is the government that makes salary payments. Such arrangements are common in African football.
