AFC Leopards produced one of their best performances so far this season after smashing Tusker 4-1 in a Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League fixture on Wednesday.
Under interim coach Fred Ambani, Ingwe stopped the Brewers, who had won four matches in a row in the top-flight. The Brewers under the guidance of interim coach Charles Okere had defeated Nairobi City Stars 1-0, Mara Sugar 2-1, Murang’a Seal 3-1 and Mathare United 2-0.
Ingwe went into the fixture at Dandora Stadium having drawn their last 1-1 against Kakamega Homeboyz but they were the most dominant side from the first whistle. However, they were forced wait until the 45th minute when Ovella Ochieng, who had scored against Abana Beingo, opened the floodgates of goals after Tusker goalkeeper Joseph Ochuka had done brilliantly to save Sydney Lokale’s penalty.
Ingwe looked more marauding in the second half and they doubled their lead in the 55th minute when Lokale scored after being put through on goal to sneak the ball past Ochuka from a one-on-one situation. Ingwe continued to dominate and substitute Victor Omune made it 3-0, from a similar situation, finishing a pass which evaded Tusker defenders and found him unmarked at the far post.
Boniface Munyendo then drilled home the fourth, in the 79th minute, this time following a goal mouth melee. Tusker never gave up as they pulled a consolation via Boban Zirintusa, who had come on in the second half. Zirintusa, who celebrated his first goal for the Brewers, finished calmly on his weaker left foot inside the box, but it was too little too late to warrant a comeback for the title-chasing side.
The defeat saw Tusker stay third on the 18-team table with 21 points from 12 matches while AFC Leopards moved to fifth, one place below their bitter rivals Gor Mahia, with 18 points from 12 matches, though the record champions have played one match less.
Meanwhile, Gor Mahia’s surge to the top took a stumble after they allowed a late goal to draw 1-1 against a determined Shabana FC. After a 0-0 outcome in the first half, Gor Mahia broke the deadlock in the 48th minute when Christopher Ochieng scored from close range.
K’Ogalo continued to search for a second but Tore Bobe remained tight at the back. K’Ogalo then suffered a blow when goalkeeper Gad Mathews was shown a straight red card in the 78th minute and Shabana took the advantage of numerical numbers to score the equaliiser in added minutes courtesy of Mathew Tegisi.
The draw saw Gor Mahia keep their top spot with 18 points from 11 matches. They have won five matches, drawn three and lost three. On the other hand, Shabana leapfrogged Sofapaka to position eighth with 17 points from 13 matches.
