Gor Mahia reduced the gap between them and joint table leaders Kenya Police FC and Tusker FC to four points following their comeback 2-1 FKF Premier League win against Mathare United in a fixture played at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Saturday.

The outcome of the hotly contested game marked a winning start for new Croatian coach Sinisa Mihic, who was appointed three days ago as a replacement for Brazilian Leonardo Martins Neiva.

However, Mihic’s start was not smooth sailing as it was the ‘Slum Boys’ who scored the opener in the 15th minute through Ellie Asieche. The goal rattled K’Ogalo, who started to raid Mathare’s danger zone searching for an equalizer.

They were finally rewarded in the 33rd minute when Alphonse Omija bundled home a cross from Rooney Onyango. The two teams went into the half-time tied at 1-1. The reigning champions looked the better side in the second period and they scored the second when Ghanaian import Enock Morrison found the back of the net.

The win pushed Gor Mahia to third position on the 18-team league table with 34 points, four less than leaders Kenya Police and second-placed Tusker, who have 38. Earlier on, Police and Tusker had a chance to outdo each other in a top-of-the-table clash which ended in a 0-0 draw.

Police have now remained unbeaten from the last 10 matches in the league since the appointment of Burundian coach Etienne Ndayiragije. The law enforcers have managed 10 wins, eight draws and suffered two defeats while the Brewers have won 11 matches, drawn five and lost four.

In another match, Bandari defeated Sofapaka 1-0 at Mbaraki Sports Club to move to fourth on the log, two points behind Gor Mahia.

Alfred Tanui scored the all-important goal in the 37th minute to stun Batoto ba Mungu and hand the Dockers their eighth win of the campaign. Bandari have garnered 32 points from eight wins, eight draws and four defeats.

The defeat saw Sofapaka drop to ninth with 25 points accumulated from six wins, seven draws and seven defeats.

Elsewhere, Bidco United came from a goal down to snatch a 1-1 draw against Nairobi City Stars. Gibert Abala had put Simba wa Nairobi ahead in the 14th minute but Bidco levelled matters through Victor Eshishute in the 46th minute.
