Gor Mahia needed a first goal to overpower Kariobangi Sharks 1-0 while AFC Leopards defeated Bandari 2-0 in some of the FKF Premier League matches played on Sunday.
At Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, the reigning champions made it two wins out of two after Gedeon Bendeka scored the all-important goal in the 24th minute. Gor Mahia went into the fixture having beaten Ulinzi Stars 3-0 and they should have taken the lead in the 12th minute when Austin Odhiambo missed from close range.
However, their efforts were rewarded in the 24th minute when Bendeka finished off a cross from Rooney Onyango. Though Sharks came a more rejuvenated side in the second period, K’Ogalo held on to register their seventh win of the campaign.
The win pushed Gor Mahia to third spot in the 18-team league table with 24 points, three less table leaders KCB and second-placed Tusker. Gor Mahia have managed seven wins, three draws and four defeats from 14 matches.
On the other hand, Sharks dropped to 12th with 18 points accumulated from four wins, six draws and five defeats. Elsewhere, AFC Leopards needed two second half goals to sink visiting Bandari 2-0.
After a 0-0 outcome in the first half, Ingwe broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute when Ronald Bebeto scored after being assisted by Victor Otieno. Man of the match Victor Omune drilled home the second in the 81st minute after another assist from Otieno.
Ingwe are now third on the log with 22 points from 14 matches. They have managed six wins, four draws and four defeats. The defeat saw the Dockers drop to sixth with 22 points amassed from five wins, seven draws and two defeats.
Murang’a Seal edged out FC Talanta 1-0. The all-important goal was scored by Nicholas Omondi in the 71st minute. Murang’a Seal jumped to eighth with 21 points from 15 matches while Talanta dropped to 16th with 14 points from 15 matches.
In another match, Ulinzi Stars recovered from the 3-0 defeat against Gor Mahia to beat Nairobi City Stars 2-1. The first half ended in a 1-1 draw but Brian Kefero scored in the 58th minute to hand the Soldiers their third win of the season.
