Gor Mahia needed a late goal to beat Posta Rangers and keep alive their hopes of retaining the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League title this season.
K’Ogalo went into the fixture seeking to bounce back after a disappointing 0-0 draw against Kakamaga Homeboyz in their last outing. Though the fixture looked easy for Gor Mahia, since Posta have been struggling this season, the outcome looked different.
The first half ended in a 0-0 draw despite Gor Mahia dominating proceedings. K’Ogalo were forced to wait until the 72nd minute when DR Congo import Gedeon Bendeka opened the scoring with a beautiful finish off the right post.
However, Gor Mahia were left stunned when Posta Rangers levelled matter with six minutes left to the final whistle when Felix Oluoch scored from close range. The referee then added nine extra minutes and Gor Mahia took advantage to score the winner.
Alphonse Omija was K’Ogalo’s hero when he bundled home a clever pass from Rooney Onyango in the 97th minute to stun the Mailmen, who had thought they had snatched a draw from the record league champions.
The win enabled Gor Mahia to keep their third spot in the 18-team league table with 31 points from 18 matches. They have managed nine wins, four draws and suffered five defeats.
Meanwhile, Posta Rangers remained rooted at the bottom with 17 points accumulated from four wins, five draws and 10 defeats. In another league duel, FC Talanta and Mathare United battled to a 1-1 draw.
In Mumias Complex, Kakamega Homeboyz scored two first half goals to sink promoted side Mara Sugar 2-0. Striker Moses Shumah put Homeboyz ahead in the seventh minute before Esione Esiye doubled their lead in the 26th minute.
Homeboyz are now eighth on the log with 26 points amassed from six wins, eight draws and five defeats while Talanta dropped to 15th with 18 points collected from four wins, six draws and nine defeats.
