Kenya Police reclaimed their lead at the top of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League following a hard-fought 1-0 win against promoted Mara Sugar on Sunday.
The law enforcers went into the game sitting second, after Tusker had dislodged them following their 1-0 win against Ulinzi Stars on Saturday. Police knew a win will help them return to the top and they achieved exactly that.
After 0-0 first half result, Police continued to search for the opener and they were rewarded in the 55th minute when striker Clinton Kinanga broke the deadlock with a superbly struck effort from outside the box.
Police under Burundian coach Etienne Ndayiragije have now won their last four matches. Since the 1-1 draw against Kakamega Homeboyz on December 21, Police have beaten Posta Rangers 3-2, Murang’a Seal 1-0, Bandari 3-0 and now Mara Sugar 1-0.
The superb run under Ndayiragije has seen them garner 36 points, the same as second-placed Tusker but they have a better goal difference. Police have won 10 matches, drawn six and lost two.
Meanwhile, Tusker have secured 11 wins, three draws and suffered four defeats. Elsewhere, defending champions Gor Mahia’s quest to close the gap with the leading sides suffered a blow after they drew 0-0 against Homeboyz at Mumias Complex.
In a game of a few chances, Gor Mahia had a goal disallowed for offside. The draw saw K’Ogalo keep their third spot with 28 points from 17 matches while Homeboyz dropped to ninth with 23 points from 18 outings.
Shabana’s good run in the league this season continued after they edged out Sofapaka 1-0. In a well-attended fixture, Tore Bobe scored through Ezekiah Omuri in the 26th minute to register their seventh win of the campaign.
The Kisii-based Glamour Boys are now sitting fifth on 27 points accumulated from seven wins, six draws and five defeats while Sofapaka, maintained their eighth position with 24 points amassed from six wins, six draws and six defeats.
At Mbaraki Sports Club in Mombasa, Bandari ended their poor run of results with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Nairobi City Stars.
