Reigning Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League champions Gor Mahia suffered another defeat in the top-flight following a 1-0 result against a resurgent Kenya Police FC on Saturday.
K’Ogalo went into the fixture at Police Sacco seeking to make amends as they had drawn 1-1 against Shabana FC in their previous assignment. Before the draw against Tore Bobe, K’Ogalo had suffered another 1-0 defeat against Bidco United.
However, Police, who have seen a remarkable improvement since the appointment of Burundian tactician Etienne Ndayiragije, proved a hard nut to crack for the record champions.
After a 0-0 half-time result, it was the law enforcers, who broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute when Alex Mang’eni capitalised on a defensive lapse inside K’Ogalo’s danger zone to stab the ball home. The result means Gor Mahia, under interim coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno, have now gone for three matches without registering a win.
For Police, they have won four straight matches under Ndayiragije, who came in to replace fired Salim Babu and Anthony Kimani. His first game in charge was a 3-1 win against Nairobi City Stars, then a 1-0 win against promoted outfit Mara Sugar, a resounding 3-0 win against Bidco United and he has now masterminded a 1-0 win against Gor Mahia.
The defeat saw K’Ogalo drop to sixth position on the 18-team league table with 18 points from 12 matches while Police moved to fourth with 20 points from 12 matches. Mara Sugar ended their recent poor run after edging out Kariobangi Sharks 1-0. The promoted side were winless from their last six matches, with their last victory coming on November 3rd - a 2-0 result against Bidco United.
Against Sharks, it was Erick Juma, who put them ahead deep into the second half with a stunning goal following a clever assist by Brian Ochieng. The win moved Mara a place above Gor Mahia to fifth with 19 points from 14 matches while Sharks dropped to eighth with 18 points from the same number of matches.
Elsewhere, Kakamega Homeboyz secured a 1-1 draw against Nairobi City Stars to remain winless from three matches. Homeboyz’s last victory was a 2-0 result achieved against Shabana on December 1st.
In another contest, Simba wa Nairobi drew 1-1 against FC Talanta. City Stars are now 11th with 16 points from 14 matches while Talanta dropped to 15th with 14 points from 13 matches.
