Tusker secured a crucial 2-1 victory against defending champions Gor Mahia in a Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League fixture at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Sunday.
The first half did not produce goals until the second period when the Brewers drew the first blood in the 51st minute. Dennis Oguta, who had just been introduced for Fabian Adikiny, picked the ball in midfield and sent Ryan Ogam through, the striker doing neatly to beat the keeper and tap into an empty net.
Gor Mahia, however, drew level in the 68th minute, when midfielder Austin Odhiambo curled in a sublime free-kick into the top right corner of Tusker’s goal. But Tusker never gave up, they kept the fight, and were rewarded late in the game.
Wanjala swung in a beautiful delivery off a free-kick finding Ogam’s run at the back post, the latter guiding the ball home with the inside of his boot.
The victory enabled Tusker to cement their lead at the top of the 18 team league with 33 points, five ahead of second-placed KCB, who have played a match less. Gor Mahia kept their fourth position with 24 points from 15 matches and have now lost five league matches.
At KPA Stadium in Mombasa, Bandari came from a goal down to snatch a 1-1 draw against a stubborn Shabana side. Tore Bobe had taken a deserved lead with only a minute played when Brian Michira evaded Bandari defenders before slamming the ball into an empty net.
However, Bandari produced a better display in the second period and their relentless attacks were rewarded in the 73rd minute when Joseph Otieno tapped home a cross from the right wing.
The draw kept Bandari seventh on the log with 23 points from 15 outings while Shabana stayed a place above the Dockers with 24 points from 17 matches. Sofapaka’s fine start to the season continued following a 2-1 win against struggling Posta Rangers.
Despite losing veteran coach Robert Matano to Singida Black Stars in Tanzania, Batoto ba Mungu started their reign under Ezekiel Akwana with a 12th minute goal courtesy of Edward Ondimo. They continued to dominate the game and Jack Onganya doubled their lead in the 30th minute off a cross from Onganya.
The Mailmen tried a comeback with Dinken Mwema finding the back of the net in the 67th minute but Sofapaka held on to secure their sixth win of the season. Sofapaka moved up to fifth with 24 points from 16 matches while Posta Rangers remained rooted at the bottom with 14 points from 17 matches.
Meanwhile, Kenya Police moved to second on the log following a hard-fought 1-0 win against Murang’a Seal at SportPesa Arena. Alred Leku scored the all-important goal in the 64th minute to silence the home fans.
Police are now three points behind table leaders Tusker with 30 points from 16 matches while Murang’a Seal dropped to 12th with 22 points from 17 matches.
