Tusker’s march to the summit of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League table took another knock following a 0-0 draw against Bandari FC in an away fixture at Mbaraki Sports Club on Sunday.
This was the second chance the Brewers had been provided to move above Kenya Police FC at the top but they squandered it. Last weekend, Tusker could have moved two points ahead of Police but they snatched a late 1-1 draw against Shabana at Machakos.
And on Sunday, with Police scheduled to play against AFC Leopards in a rescheduled fixture on Monday, the Brewers should have gone two points clear but again they could not break down a resilient Bandari side in a 0-0 stalemate.
Against the Dockers, it was once again a tale of scoring chances going begging, including an early disallowed goal as the Brewers raked in their fifth consecutive draw. A fast-paced start saw Tusker land the ball into the net in the third minute.
New signing Ian Simiyu shot into an empty net after the Bandari keeper had punched the ball right into his path as he blocked an attempted overhead kick from Deo Ojok. However, the referee ruled out the goal and instead, gave a free-kick.
Tusker continued to push and created more chances. Simiyu was once again at the end of a chance when some intricate change of passes at the edge of the box saw David Odoyo teeing up the new boy but his shot rose marginally over the bar.
In the 17th minute, Odoyo created another chance when he chested down a cross and laid for Fabian Adikiny, but the latter’s effort on the volley rose over the bar. George Kaddu had a go at goal with a well-timed run from the left, but his shot was collected by the keeper.
The left back also had an effort from a long-range freekick which sailed wide. In the second half, Bandari started with pace and had some chances but Brian Opondo did well twice to pluck the ball off the feet of substitute William Gitama.
The point now sees Tusker move to 41, same as leaders Kenya Police, who have a chance to move three clear if they manage to beat AFC Leopards on Monday. Elsewhere, Shabana used home ground advantage to the maximum as they hammered visiting Kakamega Homeboyz 4-1 at Gusii Stadium.
Tore Bobe took a deserved lead in the 31st minute when Elvis Osok rounded up Homeboyz keeper to slot into an empty net before substitute Oscar Juma grabbed a quick double in the 65th and 79th minute to put the Kisii-based Glamour Boys 3-0 up.
Brian Michara finished off a cross from Juma to make it 4-0 but Shabana could not manage a clean sheet as Henry Omollo evaded his marker to score from a tight corner in the closing stages.
The win enabled Shabana to jump to sixth with 33 points from 23 matches while Homeboyz remained a place below them with 33 points from the same number of matches. In another match, Mathare United secured a 1-1 away draw against Murang’a Seal.
