Ulinzi Stars climbed from the relegation zone in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League following their hard-fought 1-0 victory against promoted Mara Sugar on Sunday.

Heading into the game, the Soldiers, who have endured a poor start to the season, were sitting precariously at the lower reaches of the 18 team league table.

However, against Mara, who have lately been blowing hot and cold, Ulinzi needed a 79th minute strike courtesy of Staphod Odhiambo to claim maximum points and move to position 14th, two places above the drop zone.

The Soldiers have now accumulated 19 points from 16 matches. It was their fourth win of the campaign while they have drawn seven times and suffered five defeats. The win was their second in a row having beaten Nairobi City Stars 2-1 the previous weekend.

For Mara Sugar, their recent poor run of results continued and the outcome saw them drop to 12th with 19 points from 16 matches. They have secured five wins, four draws and suffered seven defeats. They have now lost two matches in a row, having suffered a 4-3 defeat against KCB on December 21.

Meanwhile, Mathare United and Kariobangi Sharks produced a 0-0 result in the ‘Slum derby’. In a game few chances, Mathare looked the better side in the opening exchanges but they were not able to utilize their chances.

In the second period, Sharks came a more rejuvenated side and had a great opportunity to seal the game which was squandered by LeonLevitt Otieno.

Mathare maintained their 10th position with 20 points amassed from five wins, five draws and six defeats while Sharks dropped to 11th with 19 points gained from four wins, seven draws and five defeats.

Elsewhere, Bidco United failed to break down a resilient Murang’a Seal side in a match that ended in a 0-0 draw.
