Durban club AmaZulu announced the addition of two new players as Usuthu attempt to recover from a poor start to the 2024-25 campaign.
32-year-old central midfielder Bongani Zungu's arrival was announced on Tuesday by the club on its social media pages. The veteran was joined by former Orlando Pirates defender Sandile Mthethwa to give AmaZulu experienced campaigners who can help the club avoid a relegation battle.
Zungu, capped 29 times by the South Africa national team, joins after his release following the 2023-24 season from Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns where he was a rotation option over two campaigns. Zungu made 45 appearances in all competitions during his second spell at Sundowns with one goal and three assists after six seasons in European club football with Portugal's Vitória Guimarães, Amiens of France and half a season on loan with Scottish giants Rangers.
Mthethwa, a 27-year-old defender who also spent time with the South Africa national team, arrives after being released from Orlando Pirates during preseason. He spent most of his time with the Soweto club on loan at fellow South African top division club Chippa United where he helped the club stave off a close shave with relegation during the 2020-21 season.
Led by former Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane, AmaZulu lost their opening four matches of the current league campaign and were eliminated from the Carling Knockout Cup but are righting the ship with three victories in their last four matches. AmaZulu are currently 13th in the 16-team league with nine points from eight matches.
