Former Chelsea star Michael Essien has ended the debate over who is a better midfielder between him in his prime years and Thomas Partey.

The former Black Stars midfielder and the Arsenal man have been a subject of debate for months over who marshaled the middle of the park better. Essien, now retired but has ventured into coaching, believes each of them belong to a different generation.

"Between myself and Thomas Partey in our primes, I don’t think I would pick myself. I would go for Partey. He is a fantastic midfielder, you know," Essien told Sporty FM.

“I will never put myself ahead of Thomas Partey. It’s two different generations so I will let you put Partey [ahead]. He is a guy that I love and I speak to him every now and then,” Essien added.

Michael Essien’s glittering career included stints at Olympique Lyon, Chelsea, Real Madrid and AC Milan Milan after cutting his professional teeth at then French Ligue 1 side Bastia.

Thomas Partey on the other hand started off at Atlético Madrid’s youth side before breaking into the first team in 2015 where he won a number of domestic and European laurels including the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup.

The 31-year-old has been an important factor for Arsenal since joining them in 2020 in a deal worth €50 million, making over 100 appearances for the Gunners.
