Ghana will not be represented at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after failing to qualify from a group that included Angola, Sudan and Niger.
The Black Stars managed to draw three games and lost three out of six qualifying matches – finishing bottom of group F with three points. The poor finish in the qualifiers ensured that the four time African champions will not be at the AFCON for the first time in 20 years. Angola topped the group on 14 points with Sudan placing second on 8 points to secure the two spots for the continental football showpiece.
Former Black Stars striker Abdul Majeed Waris has admitted that Ghana’s failure to qualify for the AFCON is a big blow to the nationals.
"I think it is a shame to all of us and I feel like something needs to be done,” Waris told JoySports. “Everyone is hurt and we are not going to feel it that much now but when it’s time for the tournament, when you see the countries arriving for the tournament and then the joy, happiness that it brings into the country, that’s when the country [Ghana] will feel it more. It is something that we are all not happy about,” he added.
Majeed Waris played for the Black Stars between 2012 and 2019 scoring 4 goals in 31 in appearances. His club football started at Ghana’s Right to Dream with further developments in England before signing a professional deal with Swedish club BK Hacken. He has played for Russian side Spartak Moscow as well as French clubs Valenciennes, Lorient and Strasbourg. The now 33-year-old also represented Portuguese giants FC Porto and Trabzonspor of Turkey with his most recent stop at Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta.
