Premier League outfit Fulham have openly criticised racist and homophobic abuse aimed at Nigeria defender Calvin Bassey following their 4-3 penalty win against Manchester United in an FA Cup fifth round fixture at Old Trafford on Sunday.
In a statement, the London club have condemned the abhorrent behaviour which they said does not have a place in football or society and promised to do everything in their power to work with the relevant authorities in identifying the perpetrators.
“Fulham Football Club is utterly appalled at the racist and homophobic abuse received and subsequently shared by Calvin Bassey on social media after Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Manchester United,” read part of the statement.
“We strongly condemn this abhorrent behaviour which has no place in football or society. Such actions are entirely unacceptable, and we stand in full support of Calvin Bassey, who will continue to receive our full backing.”
The statement continued: “We will do everything in our power to work with the relevant authorities in identifying the perpetrators of these vile messages and taking the strongest form of action against them.
“Fulham committed to maintaining a firm stance against all forms of discrimination and remains dedicated to fostering an environment of respect and inclusion.”
During the fixture, Bassey headed the Cottagers into the lead at the end of the first half, getting on the end of a clever Rodrigo Muniz flick at a corner. However, Bruno Fernandes’ crisp strike midway through the second period restored parity, and that was the way it stayed until the 120 minutes were up, leading to the shootout.
