Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) secretary general Bahiru Tilahun has stated newly appointed coach Yoseph Gebreweld is tasked to qualify for the next Women's African Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Ethiopia will play Uganda in the first qualifying round with the first leg set for February 21.
In a press conference held at the EFF, Tilahun told local media that the contract given to Gebreweld is directly related to progressing to the finals of the WAFCON: "In the contract the responsibility of the Gebreweld is stated. Gebreweld is obliged to qualify Ethiopia to WAFCON 2026. Other than that he is tasked to build a strong national side that can qualify for the World Cup tournament."
Tialhun added EFF will give full freedom for Gebreweld to lead the women's team, popularly known by its nickname Lucy. EFF pays $640 USD as monthly salary for Gebreweld. Nonetheless, finding success will force EFF to renew Gebreweld's contract.
Gebreweld left Arbaminch Ketema's women side through mutual consent to take up the job at the Ethiopian women's national team.
Ethiopia last qualified for WAFCON in 2012. Their best result in the continental tournament came in 2004 as they reached the semifinals where they lost 4-0 to eventual champions Nigeria.
