Former Ghana assistant coach George Boateng spoke about his time with the Black Stars during the journey to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Ghana came out of a disappointing 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon where they exited at the group stage with just one point from three games in group C. Ghana then started the journey to the 2022 World Cup with a playoff win against sworn rivals Nigeria over two legs. The first match ended goalless at the Baba Yara Stadium with Thomas Partey’s free kick pegging the reverse fixture at 1-1 at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, sending Ghana to the finals in Qatar over the away goal rule.
Boateng, who worked with Otto Addo as head coach and Didi Dramani as second assistant coach as well as Chris Hughton as technical advisor said, “We qualified for the World Cup 2022 in Qatar, it was unbelievable for me as a coach to be in the World Cup," he told Tribal Football.
"I really enjoyed that experience and it made me realize why people speak so highly about tournaments like the World Cup," he added.
"I have been coaching now for 12 years and I have to say that it has been a great learning curve, a good journey filled with great moments. I have been an assistant in the last few roles that I have had and right now I feel that I am much more advanced as a coach and that I have learned a lot now and evolved myself and I am ready now to take my own team whether that would be in Australia, Europe, US because I don’t mind and I am up for a challenge as long as the club has the same philosophy as mine," he added.
Ghana recorded a win against South Korea and two defeats against Portugal and Uruguay and exited at the group stage. The four time African champions have struggled since then, failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and recently missing out on qualification for the 2025 Championship for African Nations in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
