Asante Kotoko on Friday tamed Premier League title chasers Bibiani Gold Stars in week 15 of the 2024/25 season at the Baba Yara Stadium.
The Porcupine Warriors prior to chalking the four consecutive wins have struggled but managed to end the jinx against Aduana Stars where they won by 2-0 on November 24.
The record Ghana Premier League holders left it late to silence bitter rivals Accra Hearts of Oak by 1-0 before stunning Gold Stars by 2-0 on Friday.
It was a perfect day at the office for the two-time African champions who opened the flood gates with a spot kick by rugged midfielder Justice Blay in the 20th minute.
A corner kick was floated into Gold Stars goal area with Samba O’Neil’s header adjudged to have been handled by a Gold Stars defender. Blay made no mistake in converting the opening goal.
Gold Stars were reduced to ten men when Bright Boakye was red carded in the 36th minute for a reckless challenge.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Gold Stars held their ground until the 74th minute when Kwame Opoku, making his first appearance since returning to the club, produced a moment of brilliance to double Kotoko’s lead.
Kotoko held their guns by not conceding with the victory catapulting them into second on 27 points, same as Gold Stars from 15 league matches. The two clubs are behind leaders, Heart of Lion by three points following Lions’ 1-0 home victory over new boys, Young Apostles on Thursday.
In other games played on Thursday, Aduana Stars beat Legon Cities by 1-0 at the Legon Stadium with the game between Bechem United and Holy Stars postponed due Bechem’s failure to show up for the game over a faulty bus.
