The week 11 matches of the Ghana Premier League drew to a close with mixed results across the nine venues during the weekend.
One of the clubs that would cherish its victory on the day is 2000 CAF Champions League winners Hearts of Oak who shocked Karela United by 1-0 at the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale. Young striker Hamza Issah’s early first half goal ensured the Phobians clawed three straight wins that have come against Medeama, Vision FC and now Karela United.
The millennium champions move into fourth on 18 points to move level with Heart of Lions after week 11 and head coach Aboubakar Ouattara expressed his excitement about the rich vein of form:
“We thank everybody. I think it was a very difficult game but I think we got that early goal to save the situation. We congratulate everybody. But I congratulate Karela United, if they continue like this I think they can do well. We won and it is football," Ouatarra said after the game.
"The talent is there and we are trying to work on the teamwork. The only thing we have is the hard work and the teamwork to build a team. It is not easy but we are trying to do our best and this is the only thing we can do in football. The Individuals we have it and we are trying to build the team slowly.
"The thing I tell the fans every time and everywhere I go is that every game we are playing, we are playing for them. If the fans are happy, we are happy and we need them to come for the next game, to come in numbers to encourage the team. Not only on Facebook or on social media but come to the stadium in your numbers, follow these boys and encourage them,” he added.
Elsewhere at the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi, record league holders Asante Kotoko had an afternoon to forget following a 2-0 loss against Nations FC. The defeat is the Porcupine Warriors fourth in a row from five games with one point collected from those five outings. Kotoko head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum admits that the technical team needs to find solutions to the club’s poor showing lately.
“I think this is not the results we all expected. We came in very determined, very ready to get the maximum points, unfortunately we couldn’t get it. We just have to try as much as possible to find solutions to why we are unable to win and I think once we are able to do that, we are good to go. And as a coach I need to make sure that I find solutions,” he said after the game.
“The game is about taking decisions and before you can take any decision, you must be aware of where you are standing, the in and out of the penalty area and I think we need to work on more positional awareness,” he concluded.
The two time continental champions have dropped on the standings to 8th on 15 points from 11 matches much to the worry of its teeming supporters.
In other results, Accra Lions and Heart of Lions played out a goalless draw at the Legon Sports Stadium on Saturday. Nsoatreman and two time Premier League champions Aduana Stars ended one all.
