Hearts of Oak opened up week 19's set of fixtures from the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League with a 1-0 victory against Heart of Lions at the Legon Sports Stadium on Friday evening.
An evenly matched first half saw few goal scoring chances going both ways with both sides failing to score on the in the opening 45 minutes.
The brightest chance fell the way of Hearts of Oak to shoot themselves into the lead but Hamza Issah blew the opportunity over the bar on the 28th minutes much to the relief of the traveling Heart of Lions fans.
The Phobians came extremely close once again when Mawuli Wayo’s left footed strike ricocheted off the goal post before Lions goalkeeper Lawrence Osei effortlessly grabbed it, ending the first half goalless.
The resumption of the second half looked similar to that of the first but the Phobians raised the level of their game, resulting in a penalty kick.
Stephen Appiah Asare was brought down in the Heart of Lions penalty area with FIFA referee Daniel Laryea pointing to the spot.
Mawuli Wayo made no mistake in sending goalkeeper, Lawrence Asare the wrong way for Hearts of Oak’s only goal and the eventual winner of the match on the 50th minute.
The 2000 CAF Champions League winners will now go on 33 points from 19 league matches, moving temporarily into 3rd on the log. The remaining league matches will be played between Saturday and Sunday across various venues.
