Interim Asante Kotoko coach Karim Zito has stated that the race for the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League title is a tough task.
The veteran trainer has been tasked to win the season’s double, the FA Cup and the Premier League, which looks quite bleak with Nations FC and Heart of Lions equally in pursuit of the title.
The Porcupine Warriors currently sit 4th on the league log with 47 points, six adrift of leaders Gold Stars and four behind Heart of Lions after 28 matches played. The Porcupine Warriors lost two consecutive games, a 3-0 result to Accra Lions in Accra before sinking by 2-0 to Nations FC at the Dr. Kyei Sports Complex in Week 28.
The poor form prompted the dismissal of Prosper Narteh Ogum and the appointment of Zito, who has been charged with winning the Premier League.
“It was a very difficult decision,” Zito said. “Because for the first time I have been tasked to win the league. I have been saving clubs from the drop but this time I have to win the league. It’s not going to be easy.”
"Six matches, 18 points can change a lot," Zito said during his unveiling. "So it's not over until it's over. I know we will play against those at the top. So we will fight until the end."
Zito's first encounter in the dugout is a Premier League match at home against Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Stadium.
The veteran trainer recently guided Dreams FC to a historic CAF Confederation Cup semi-final and famously led Ghana’s U-20 team to the 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations title.
Zito will be aiming for an immediate impact when Kotoko face Aduana FC in the Matchday 29 clash at the Baba Yara Stadium this Sunday.
