Head coach of Asante Kotoko, Prosper Narteh Ogum has delved into their slim week 13 win over arch rivals Hearts of Oak in Kumasi on Sunday.
The Porcupine Warriors posted a 1-0 victory over the Phobians in a cracking derby at the almost full to capacity Baba Yara Stadium. Striker Albert Amoah capitalized on a poor defensive clearance by Hearts centre back Kelvin Osei Asibey and wove past goalkeeper Benjamin Asare to score the only goal and the winner.
Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum, whose head was on the chopping board over the club’s recent poor output, shared some words after the game.
“I think it was exciting game, we were very sold, very compact and we were always first to the ball and they tried to also catch us on the counter but then I think we were able to identify those ones as early as possible."
“Therefore we left Albert on top so that we will have more men in the middle of the park to win the first and the second balls. And if you see from the first half, we had a lot of the chances out of hitting the ball into spaces behind them. So it was a very good game."
“We all know [Kelvin Osei] Asibey is an excellent player but then sometimes he over does it. So I was always asking Albert [Amoah] to continue until the action is over because Asibey could do something that is extravagant that could make him lose the ball. So that was why I kept telling him that until the action is over in that zone he shouldn’t give up."
“And if you see the goal he scored, it came out of the same instruction I gave to him.” Prosper Narteh Ogum’s told the media.
The record Ghana Premier League holders have now recorded two straight wins after beating Aduana Stars 2-0 in week 12.
They now jump into 5th on the league table with 21 points, same as Medeama SC after 13 matches.
Hearts of Oak on the other hand drop into 7th on 19 points, two behind Kotoko after the loss.
Head coach of the 2000 CAF Champions League winners, Aboubakar Ouattara, does not want to apportion blame to any player.
“We lost 1-0. I congratulate Kotoko, no problem. It is a very good match and the team which has a good luck scored the goal. I don’t want to blame any player here.” Ouattara said.
The record Ghana FA Cup holders have lost for the first time in six league matches of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League.
