Head coach of Asante Kotoko Prosper Narteh Ogum has been left scratching his head over Ghana’s lack of “goal scoring strikers.”
The University of Cape Coast lecturer spearheaded the Porcupine Warriors to the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League title where Cameroonian import, Franck Mbella mesmerized defenders with breathtaking performances.
The record league holders are on a fine trajectory this season, sitting in 2nd on the league table with 27 points, three away from leaders, Heart of Lions after 15 games. The club’s top striker, Albert Amoah has scored 7 goals from 12 league matches but failed to find the net during Ghana’s horrible 2024 CHAN qualifiers.
Ogum said: “Goal scoring has actually been an issue in the league. Sometimes if you have people who are natural goal scorers, it’s easier but then unfortunately, we don’t have these natural goal scorers across the teams in the league."
"Again, the nature of the league is such that, it’s very defensive in nature; most of the teams can defend very well. “Looking at the solidity, the compactness in the defensive structure of all the teams that play in the league, it makes it very difficult to score so that’s why you see a lot of teams sharing points instead of winning," added Ogum.
Asante Kotoko have recorded four straight wins in the ongoing Ghana Premier League and will next travel to the Tarkwa TnA Park as guest of Medeama SC on Friday.
