Ghana has an array of talent playing in major and other European leagues and one of them is bulky striker, Bernard Tekpetey.
The sturdy forward has been a mainstay for Bulgaria outfit Ludogorets Razgrad both in the domestic league and European competitions where he has won eight domestic trophies as well as Bulgarian football's Best Foreign Player award for 2022.
Many people who believed that Tekpetey would be a perfect replacement for the departed Asamoah Gyan but that hope has fizzled out. Coaches that have been put at the helm of the Black Stars have preferred Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, Athletic Club’s Inaki Williams and Jordan Ayew of Leicester City.
The striker has admitted that being overlooked can be frustrating but acknowledged that the decision ultimately rests with the national team coach.
“Sometimes it hurts because, as a player, you know you are playing your best at the highest level,” Tekpetey said in a recent interview with Asempa FM. "Sometimes you are tempted to compare the players called to the national team to yourself. However, I feel it is the decision of the coach to call players who he thinks will suit his plan," he added.
The forward is currently recovering from an injury he picked up in a Champions League qualifying game against Qarabag back in August. Last season, he scored 15 goals and provided nine assists in all competitions for his club. He has so far been capped two times for the Black Stars.
