Ghana legend, Mohammed Ahmed “Polo” has urged the senior national male team to treat their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match of the March window against Chad with utmost seriousness.
The Black Stars will host Chad on the fifth matchday at the Accra Sports Stadium on March 21 before emplaning to Morocco as guests of Madagascar on March 24 for their sixth fixture.
Ghana are tied in Group I on nine points with island nation Comoros and are faced with must win situations to stand a chance of qualifying for the World Cup finals hosted by Mexico, Canada and the USA next year.
Polo, in an interview with Accra based Radio Gold admitted that the four-time African champions are “seated on a time bomb” and must act cautiously in the upcoming game.
“If we refuse to accept that things do change including football, you have to know where you are coming from so that you can maintain where you are going,” Polo told Radio Gold Sports.
“If think those who played before had it, it’s because they were so passionate, patriotic and committed to make Ghana what it is. Today these younger ones have got it easier to perform, look at what is happening with all these countries refusing us to participate in the AFCON 2025 in Morocco.
“We are only left with this World Cup qualifiers and if we don’t take it seriously. We have to do everything possible to qualify because it looks like we are running on a time bomb. It is very dangerous and you can’t take anything for granted so this Chad March they have to treat it with every caution,” Polo added.
Ghana missed out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after a poor qualifying campaign where they collected just three points from six games.
It will be the first time in over two decades that the 2010 World Cup quarterfinalists will be absent from the continental football tournament.
Ghana have made four appearances at the World Cup in 2006, 2010, 2014 in Germany, South Africa and Brazil respectively as well as the 2022 edition in Qatar.
