Petro de Luanda moved four points clear at the top of the table in Angola's top division Girabola following a 2-1 victory over CD Lunda Sul over the weekend.
The match, which began on Saturday and was postponed at halftime due to inclement weather, was finished early Sunday where the league leaders confirmed victory. Both goals for Os Tricolores came from corner kicks where midfielder Soares opened the scoring in the 10th minute from a service by winger Jaredi Teixeira.
Jaredi also provided the corner kick for club legend Tiago Azulão to produce a powerful header in the 60th minute before Lunda Sul found a late consolation through Cuca's penalty kick. The 36-year-old Azulão was in the XI for his 2024-25 season debut and Sunday's goal brought his career Girabola total to an astounding 162 goals, all with Petro.
Azulão's goal was a firm reminder of his service to the club which received plenty of recognition from Petro supporters and the club. The native of São Paulo first arrived in Angola with Petro in 2016 and has won three Girabola titles as well as five Angolan Cups and one Angolan Super Cup, winning Girabola top scorer on five occasions (2017, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023).
Petro remain undefeated in league play this season with their last defeat coming when they were surprisingly eliminated from the final stage of CAF Champions League qualifying by Congolese club AS Maniema Union. Wiliete SC are four points back and Petro's rivals Primeiro de Agosto sit in third place eight points off the pace.
