Mzuzu City Hammers stunned Castel Challenge Cup holders FCB Nyasa Big Bullets 1-4 on post-match penalties at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Tuesday to qualify for the final.

The two teams had settled for a goalless draw although Kalisto Pasuwa’s home team should have sealed it in open play, but striker Babatunde Adepoju and company were guilty of wastage in front of goal.

In the end, the semifinal contest went straight to the post-match penalties. Skipper Gomezgani Chirwa converted Bullets’ first spot kick only for team-mates Collins Mujuru and Stanley Billiat to spoil it all as goalkeeper Chancy Mtete saved duo’s attempts before Bayo Fatayo converted the decisive kick to send Hammers through.

Hammers, from the Northern Region city of Mzuzu, now date Mighty Mukuru Wanderers in the final of the national knockout tournament at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday.

In an earlier semifinal played on Sunday, Wanderers thrashed killers Panthers FC 3-0 to book their place in the final and end the giant-killing antics of the minnows who had booted out top-flight league teams such as newly crowned TNM Super League champions Silver Strikers.

The final marks the very end of the domestic season in Malawi running from March to December. The rest of competitions concluded weeks ago.
