Sierra Leone strike national team star attacker Augustus Kargbo has expressed delight after joining English Championship club Blackburn Rovers.
Kargbo joins the former English Premier League champions from Italian Serie B side Cesena on a two-year deal that will keep him at the club until 2027. The former Reggiana forward is known for his explosive playing style and strong performance which includes helping Cesena achieve promotion to Serie B last season.
The 25-year-old opened up on the joy of playing the English second tier in an interview with Blackburn Rovers media.
“I’m very happy, I’m very excited to be here, it feels good. It’s like a dream,” Kargbo told Blackburn media.
“I’ve always dreamed of playing in England and getting this opportunity to play for this historic club means a lot to me and my family and I’m looking forward to it.
“It’s the highest level and especially back home like we watch more of English football, English Premier League and at the time when we were young we watched Blackburn Rovers playing and it feels surreal right now. I’m here right now and I’m looking forward to it,” the Freetown native added.
He has previously played for Italian clubs such as Campobasso and Crotone, displaying impressive scoring abilities throughout his career in the fourth tier with Campobassa as a young player before representing Crotone in Italy's second tier Serie B as well as the top flight Serie A.
The announcement marks the third signing for Blackburn during the January transfer window alongside former Plymouth Argyle midfielder Adam Forshaw and defender Dion Sanderson from Birmingham City.
With 21 caps for Sierra Leone and five goals to his name for the national team, Kargbo aims to replicate his scoring prowess with Rovers in the current season. Blackburn are currently 5th and look set for a fierce battle as they attempt to qualify for the promotion playoffs and achieve top flight Premier League status.
