Ghana legend, Abedi “Pele” Ayew has indicated the need to hatch plans that will help record positive results in the remaining 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches which resume in September.
The Black Stars revived their chances of qualifying for the global football showpiece after recording two consecutive wins against Chad and Madagascar in March. The four-time African champions whitewashed Chad by 5-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium before nailing Madagascar by 2-0 at the Al Hoceima Stadium in Morocco in matches day five and six of the qualifiers.
The double victory sent the 2010 FIFA World Cup quarterfinalists to the top of Group I with 15 points, three better than Comoros and five ahead of Mali after six games.
In a meeting with Ghana’s Sports Minister, Abedi Ayew, who won the African Footballer of the Year awards for three straight times, told the media about his resolve to help the Black Stars reach the World Cup in USA, Canada and Mexico next year.
“Minister and me have been seeing each other for a couple of months, and we’ve been having a chat about the Black Stars. We gave ourselves a target—to ensure that we go through the two matches ahead of us at that time—and today, we’ve been able to clear that. The football continues, and the qualifying series are on. We need to plan again and see the way forward and execute every match as it comes.
“Yesterday, I had a call from my honourable that asked me if I could pass by to see him, and I’m here. We had a very faithful discussion. We also had other discussions concerning football in the country, which are not to be revealed to the public. It’s between me and him, and we’ll ensure that when that success comes again, he’ll come and tell you what it is.”
