After two seasons in the Saudi Pro League, Ivorian midfielder Seko Fofana appears set to return to French Ligue 1 club Rennes on a permanent basis for the new year.
French media reported on the potential move last week with the 29-year-old Ivory Coast star sighted in the country and now it is confirmed that Fofana completed a medical on Monday. Get French Football News reports that the presence of Rennes president Arnaud Pouille influenced Fofana's return to French football after three successful seasons with RC Lens where Pouille was previously president. Rennes are currently in 12th place, four points above the relegation zone.
For Fofana, the move would close the chapter on a rather indifferent spell in Saudi football since joining Al-Nassr in July 2023. After being named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year for the 2022-23 season as well as the 2021-22 campaign, Fofana joined Nassr for a large fee of €25 million. He spent only half the 2023-24 season at Nassr before being shipped out on loan to Steven Gerrard-managed Al Ettifaq in January 2024 where he has remained since.
Fofana made 58 appearances for Nassr and Ettifaq across all competitions, contributing 6 goals and 5 assists as well as winning the 2023 Arab Club Champions Cup with Cristiano Ronaldo and Al-Nassr. The former French youth national team player has 7 goals in 22 appearances for Ivory Coast since debuting against Morocco in 2017. He was a key component for the Ivorian team as the host nation won the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with a goal and an assist in seven matches with the Elephants.
