Ghana defender Jerome Opoku has expressed joy over his first competitive start for the senior national team.

The lanky defender fulfilled his long dream of earning a cap in highly competitive game for the Black Stars when he played a part in the 3-0 win over Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Morocco.

The Istanbul Basaksehir centre-back, who had previously played in friendlies, started for the first time in an official match after enjoying a few minute against Chad. The 26-year-old shared his excitement in an interview with Flashscore.

“I’ve been really working hard and looking forward to getting a chance in the national team, and I knew such a day would come for me to help the team,” he said. “For me, it’s always been a dream and a privilege to wear the national colors and defend the nation.”

“We know it’s not done yet, so we stay focused and make sure we get the job done.”

Ghana recorded two consecutive wins - beating Chad 5-0 in match day five at the Accra Sports Stadium before dispatching Madagascar by 3-0 in the sixth fixture at the Al Hoceima Stadium in Morocco.

The four time African champions currently lead Group I with 15 points, three better than Comoros after six round of matches played. The qualifiers return in September with the Black Stars aiming to reach another mundial set to be hosted by Canada, USA and Mexico.
